Question by John: Is Raid-1 Important for a Dedicated Server Hosting Package?
I run about 5 websites which together get about 500,000 pageviews a month (wordpress plus a forum). I’m currently hosted on a shared plan, and I’m looking to go straight to a dedicated server.

I’ve noticed some companies offer standard drives (eg. 2 x 250 GB Hard Drive), but others offer a more expensive option to upgrade to a RAID configuration.

What is recommended??

Best answer:

Answer by kenny
Raid has a lower failure rate, its more reliable so big companies use it. Ask wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

Question by : Please tell me more information about Shared, VPS Hosting and Dedicated Server.?
Please tell me more information about Shared, VPS Hosting and Dedicated Server.

Best answer:

Answer by Liu Li
A Dedicated Server is a full server that is your ‘own’; you share it with no other websites. You have the full hard drive, full use of RAM, full use of the processor. The whole gambit. If you could walk in to the data center where your account is, and look at the actual server, it would be your account only on that server. You have root access.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server. A VPS simulates having a dedicated server, but you are still sharing the server with other websites. You still have root access, but the actual hard drive in the server is split between several websites (clients). The benefit of root access is you have better control over your filesystem. Many programs will not run without root access. Some configurations/options can not be set up without root access. Shared Hosting companies are usually very strict about making such adjustments for clients. So a VPS would be a good fit for someone needing root access, but doesn’t want to pay the full price for a dedicated server.

A VPS differs from basic shared hosting in that with a VPS, you get root access to the file system and in shared hosting you do not.

A VPS is cheaper than a dedicated server. Shared hosting is the cheapest of all, but offers the least amount of control and flexibility.

Good luck!

If I install the wordpress software in my hosting account am i going to able to post blogs under any directory or subdomain i want…………
If not how do you do that how do you get your blogs to be published under your subdomains If it works my host provider is hostgator

Best answer:

Answer by DJ
http://www.H0STGAT0R.com , your host has WordPress in Cpanel. You can indeed install it anywhere that you like, and if your plan allows it, you can have as many installations as you’d like. (You need 1 mysql database per installation)

One of my sites has 20+ blogs on it, they are all in their own subdirectories.

It’s pretty simple. Play around with Cpanel. You can create and delete WordPress installations very quickly and easily.

Question by Justin: When choosing a dedicated hosting server, should I go for a faster processor speed or more memory?

My usage for the server will mainly be for my clients, who mostly have simple websites that do not require alot of processing as far as I can imagine. Should I hesitate when choosing a Celeron processor versus a Pentium 4 processor when the benefit to choosing the slower cpu is a gain in memory from 512mb to 1gb?

Best answer:

Answer by unalloyedcube
Depending on what the function of the server would be. but both are great to have in any case.

Question by romemakeway: What’s the best way to go from a simple shared hosting account w/ hostgator to a good VPS or dedicated server?
I am wanting to upgrade my hosting account to a more secure plan. However, I have about 10 sites and I have done a lot of work to them. I want a smooth transition from A hostgator shared account to a reputable VPS or dedicated server.

I have never done this before and don’t want to be stuck exporting and importing anything. Can this be done?

Best answer:

Answer by $ am
Since you have mentioned you need a reliable vps or dedicated provider and need a seamless transfer to be performed from your old host Hostgator to your new server, then I would highly recommend you to go with either of the following companies..

http://www.infrenion.com — I had a vps with them in their UK datacenter and later upgraded to UK based dedicated server. Their support is very friendly, polite and always on their toes to help you a way step ahead.. I believe they offer free migration from old host to their servers, however you may confirm the same with their live chat..

http://www.rshosting.com — I have a managed vps plan with them in their US datacenter and have had a very pleasant experience while dealing with their experienced support admins. And moreoever they offer managed vps and dedicated servers, which other companies often charge additional while offering such services.

Apart from the above there are several other hosting providers there in the market claiming good things about their support, but since I do not have a personal experience with them, it is difficult to comment on the level of their services and support.

Good luck with your search..

What do you think? Answer below!
